About the program
McLean Hospital is one of the few hospitals in the United States with an inpatient unit just for people living with the effects of trauma and dissociation. Its Dissociative Disorders and Trauma Program cares for adults who live with the long-lasting effects of childhood abuse and other painful experiences, including people with dissociative identity disorder.
The inpatient unit is on the second floor of Proctor House, on McLean’s Belmont campus just outside Boston. It is meant for times of crisis, when someone needs a safe, secure place and around-the-clock care. Most of the people treated there are women, but the unit is open to adults of all genders.
For people who don’t need a hospital stay, or who are ready to step down after one, McLean’s Trauma Continuum at the Hill Center offers a partial hospital (day) program and an outpatient clinic. Treatment there focuses on each stage of trauma recovery, using several approaches backed by research, and is meant to help people build skills and strength to manage their lives.
McLean is affiliated with Harvard Medical School. The program has been running for more than 20 years and also has its own research program studying PTSD and DID during treatment.
