Sheppard Pratt: The Trauma Disorders Program
Towson, Maryland, near Baltimore
Please note: Sheppard Pratt no longer has a separate Trauma Disorders Program. The hospital says it now provides trauma-informed care across all of its inpatient programs. If you were thinking of going there, please call and ask what they currently offer for dissociative disorders.
The history of the program
For many years, the Trauma Disorders Program at Sheppard Pratt was one of the best-known inpatient programs in the country for people with dissociative identity disorder.
Sheppard Pratt opened its Dissociative Disorders Unit in 1992, to specialize in inpatient treatment of severe dissociative disorders, mainly DID. In 1997 it was renamed the Trauma Disorders Program, because the unit was serving a wider range of trauma survivors, and because dissociative disorders were coming to be understood as part of a wider range of trauma-related disorders. Nearly everyone treated there also met the criteria for complex PTSD.
The program focused on safety and stabilization, the first phase of trauma treatment, with therapy as the main treatment and medication as support. Many people with DID traveled there from other states, and admissions often had a waiting list.
Sheppard Pratt today
Sheppard Pratt is still a large psychiatric hospital system in Maryland, with many specialty programs. It continues to treat PTSD and dissociative disorders within its inpatient programs, though no longer in a separate unit.
Ivory Garden does not endorse any program. This information is shared so you know what is out there. Please contact Sheppard Pratt directly about current services, admissions and insurance.
